About the Photographer
James K. Papp is an award-winning photographer and author residing in Whatcom County, Washington State. He is attracted to water features and the trees, hills, and skies that frame them. Being around water has been a major theme in his life since arriving from his native Fairbanks, Alaska to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. After earning a degree in Transportation Geography, James worked for 40 years in the marine shipping field. During this time he enjoyed countless hikes along the mountain streams, lakes, waterfalls, and snowfields of the Pacific Northwest.
James originally photographed his adventures in Kodachrome to share in slide shows. He eventually migrated to digital cameras and became interested in fine art photography. Workshops in Washington, California, and the Southwest helped him develop his skills. The lens became a magical portal to connect more deeply with the world, his art inspired by mystery and awe. Today James is immersed in his current photographic project, Blessings of the Waters: From Glacier to Sea, which will be published as a hardback book in Spring 2027. He and his wife, Lisa E. Papp, married for 40 years, create and publish inspirational books (which include James’ photography) together at InquireWithin.com.
About the Exhibit
Blessings of the Waters: From Glacier to Sea delves into the deep and evolving relationships that the community shares with the waters of Washington State. From the Cascade Mountains to the Puget Sound, water is the connector between residents, tribes, farmers, fishers, municipalities, and industries, as well as nature’s flora and fauna. Informed by James K. Papp’s 40 years working in marine shipping and by countless hikes along the streams, lakes, and snowfields of the Evergreen State, this work highlights the increasing pressure on our precious water. We are called upon to care for and show gratitude to our shared waters in a deeper, even spiritual way for the benefit of generations to come.
