In the past we’ve donated Inquire Within books to Books to Prisoners. Books To Prisoners is a Seattle-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to “foster a love of reading behind bars, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-empowerment, and break the cycle of recidivism.” They believe that books are tools for learning and for opening minds to new ideas and possibilities, and engage incarcerated individuals with the benefits of reading by mailing tens of thousands of free books to inmates across the country each year.
From time-to-time we receive a letter from a prisoner who has been sent our book. A letter arrived recently from David, a prisoner in Florida serving a life term. David says…
“You lovingly and kindly sent me your book Inquire Within a couple of years ago. I am so grateful for that book! It made living in this hell of a prison a much more tolerable place by practicing your teachings and wisdom. People think I’m crazy because I walk around here with a smile on my face and I like to tell jokes and make people smile and laugh. They notice the sense of inner peace that I have aquired thanks to your book.”
David then goes on to request that we send him a second copy of Inquire Within as his copy was stolen by another prisoner. But, rather than being angry, he realizes that his fellow inmate would benefit from the calming and inspiring messages in the book. We are happy that we are able to offer support and inspiration to people with our book.
Books to Prisoners receives over 1,000 requests for books in all genres every month. This all-volunteer organization relies on books donated by community members to answer these requests, so please consider making a donation to help a few of the thousands of individuals who request books each year.
